Ticks are memebers of the arachnid family and are closely related to spiders, mites and scorpions. Ticks are parasites that feed on the blood of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. In order to complete their life cycle, they must have a host.

Ticks go through four stages during their lifetime: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Eggs are laid by the female tick on the ground, often in areas with a lot of vegetation such as woods or tall grass. Once the eggs hatch, the larva (or seed tick) will climb onto a host and begin to feed. After it has fed for several days, it will then drop off its host and molt into a nymph. The nymph will then find another host and repeat the cycle. Once it has fed enough, it will drop off its host and molt into an adult. Adult ticks will then mate and the female will lay eggs, starting the cycle all over again.

Ticks can transmit a variety of diseases to their hosts, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, babesiosis, ehrlichiosis, tularemia, and tick-borne relapsing fever. Lyme disease is the most common of these diseases in the United States.
